A crack, once it happens, has two futures. It can be hidden, or it can be honored. This bowl chose the second.
The wood came from a tree the local government ordered down, reclaimed before it could be discarded. As it dried, the grain opened along two long fissures, wide enough to threaten the piece entirely. Rather than disguise them, they were set with fine black inlay, so the break itself becomes a line the eye follows across the bowl.
At 18 centimeters wide and 8 centimeters tall, the bowl reads as calm from a distance, and only close up reveals the fault running through it.
Finished with walnut oil. Signed by the maker. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
The crack could have ended the bowl. Instead, it defines it.
