What kinds of wood do you use?

We primarily work with reclaimed wood we find in our area (México) but we also use sustainable harvested woods, like walnut, Oak, Tzalam for some of our Limited pieces. We care about reclaiming materials that can have an incredible character while contributing to promote less "trash products"

We choose each piece for its character, grain, color, and natural imperfections. Whenever possible, we let the material guide the design rather than forcing every piece of wood into the same shape.

Because wood is a natural material, no two pieces are ever exactly alike. Variations in grain, color, knots, cracks, and other marks are part of what makes each object unique.

Can I give a Nanous product as a special gift?

Absolutely. Our pieces are designed to be objects that can remain meaningful for years, making them especially suited to weddings, 5th-anniversary wood celebrations, birthdays, housewarmings, and other important moments.

If you are choosing a piece as a gift and aren't sure which one would be right, contact us and we can help you select something based on the occasion and the person receiving it.

Can Nanous products be personalized?

Many of our hardwood bowls and boards can be personalized with precision custom engraving. We can discuss options such as engraving, a special inscription, or creating a piece specifically for an occasion or space. It can be a family name, wedding date or a company logo, we would love to help transforming it into a cherished family legacy or a sophisticated gift.

What can I expect from the Nanous Newsletter?

The newsletter is where we introduce the newest pieces coming out of Nanous Workshop.

Rather than producing large collections of identical objects, we work in small batches and often create one-of-a-kind pieces. New arrivals may include turned bowls, sculptural objects, lighting, and other experiments from the workshop.

Some pieces may never be reproduced once they are sold. The collection is therefore always changing, with each arrival offering a new exploration of wood, form, and craftsmanship. If you Suscribe, you´ll be the first to know about it with a 24hr window to see and buy new pieces before anyone else.

Are Nanous wooden products food-safe?

Yes! Every piece we craft is finished with natural and food safe finishes. It can be A mix of natiral oils and waxes or just special walnut oil made specificly for this porpouse. This food-safe finish penetrates the hardwood fibers to create a resilient barrier against moisture and bacteria, while enlivening the naturally beautiful grain.

How do I restore the luster to a dull wooden bowl?

Apply a light coat of our Klara Wax to the surface of your bowl. Allow the wax to penetrate the fibers for a few minutes, then buff away the excess with a soft cloth and let dry for at least one day before use. This simple action seals the wood, prevents graying, and keeps the grain vibrant and resistant to food odors and stains.

If you prefer you can also use oils and waxes available from other vendors, like bees wax, caranuba wax or natural oils.

Are wooden bowls food safe for hot and cold liquids?

Four pieces made out of a single piece of wood, it´s ok to use hot and cold liquids or food. For pieces with more than one type of wood, we recomend using it only for cold liquids and food or allow them to cool somewhat before placing them in the bowl.

Are Nanous bowls made from a single piece of wood?

Some of our pieces, like the reclaimed and unique pieces are made out of a single piece of wood, these bowls begin as solid forms cut from logs. Unlike most commercial wooden bowls, which are made from multiple pieces of wood or bamboo, each bowl is turned from one solid block of hardwood, honoring the natural grain.

Other pieces like lamps, pens or some bowls, are made out of two or more different pieces, we try to use all the material we have available.

What is a "live edge" wooden bowl?

A live edge bowl preserves part of the tree's original outer edge rather than cutting it into a perfectly circular rim.

When the bowl is turned, the natural contour of the tree remains visible around the edge, creating an irregular silhouette that reflects the original shape of the branch or trunk.

No two live edge bowls are alike. Their irregular rims, changes in thickness, knots, and natural features are evidence of the tree from which they came.

Why is there a lighter color around the edge of my bowl?

That lighter area is usually sapwood, the younger outer portion of the tree.

Sapwood naturally has a lighter color than the darker heartwood found toward the center of the tree. In walnut, for example, the contrast can be particularly striking.

We don't always remove these differences. Instead, we often allow them to remain visible because they reveal the structure and history of the tree. What might look like a variation in color is actually part of the material itself.

Is the irregular rim of a live edge bowl fragile?

While the silhouette appears delicate and airy, the rim is remarkably resilient. Each bowl is inspected and finished with its particular shape and structure in mind.

Treat the bowl as you would any handcrafted wooden object: handle it carefully, avoid dropping it, and don't use the rim as a grip or handle.

Are Nanous live edge bowls made with bark?

Not necessarily.

Some live edge pieces may retain small areas of bark when it is stable and contributes to the character of the piece. In other cases, the bark is removed because it is loose, unstable, or unlikely to withstand normal use.

Our priority is to preserve the natural character of the wood while creating an object that can be handled and enjoyed.
